Oud: a fragrance with a history
Fragrant wood, treasured incense, intimate perfume. Oud carries a cultural history that reaches across Asia and the Middle East, inviting a slower appreciation of scent, texture and time.
The transformation within the tree
Agarwood is resin-rich wood formed within certain trees, including Aquilaria, as they respond to injury and biological stress. Distillation draws its aromatic character into oud oil. The wood’s origin, resin development and processing help shape the fragrance—a world of subtle differences that rewards close attention.
Agaru, chénxiāng and the art of appreciation
Known as agaru in Sanskrit, agarwood has a long place in Indian fragrant and devotional traditions. In China, chénxiāng evokes “sinking fragrance,” a name associated with resin-rich wood dense enough to sink in water. Through incense, carved objects and personal adornment, agarwood became an art of appreciation as well as a treasured aromatic.
Vietnam’s agarwood heritage includes kỳ nam, an especially prized material described in historical trade accounts. These regional traditions reveal the breadth of agarwood culture. Our collection offers Original Oud Oil and the separately named 2008 Wild Borneo variety.
Fragrance across the trade routes
Agarwood moved through networks linking Southeast Asia with India, China, Japan and the Middle East. Archaeological study of incense from China’s Tang-era Famen Temple identified agarwood with frankincense—a tangible glimpse of aromatic exchange along the Silk Roads.
Scent, sound and a moment of stillness
The oud is also the name of the pear-shaped stringed instrument heard across the Middle East and North Africa. Fragrance and music offer a poetic pairing: warm wood, unfolding notes and the pleasure of paying attention. Let an oud melody accompany your fragrance ritual, or explore the floral character of Blue Lotus Oil beside the depth of agarwood.
